PhD Program
Admission Requirements:
Our program seeks students with outstanding potential for independent scholarship, evidenced by excellence in coursework and recommendations from those in a good position to evaluate a student's capabilities. The GRE general test is required; MCAT or LSAT tests cannot be substituted. Applicants to the Ph.D. program should have taken courses in calculus (three semesters), and advanced undergraduate courses in linear algebra and probability. Experience with numerical computing is also recommended. Applications from students in applied fields such as biology, biochemistry, economics and computer science are strongly encouraged, with the understanding that necessary mathematical coursework may have to be completed before or soon after enrollment in the program.
Application deadline:
December 15 to receive consideration for financial support; later applications will still be considered.
Completion Requirements:
For all Ph.D. students, twenty four credits are required of students matriculating in the program without a master's degree; sixteen are required beyond the master's. For those with a related master's degree, up to eight units can be transferred. Both written and oral exams, plus a dissertation comprising an original contribution to the field, also are required. Students are expected to participate in academic activities such as the Statistics Seminar and faculty-organized working groups.
Funding:
All students admitted to the PhD program receive an offer of funding in the form of a fellowship, teaching assistantship, traineeship, or research assistantship. The funding package includes tuition, health insurance and an annual stipend of around $25,000.
Masters Programs
Admission Requirements:
GRE general test is required; MCAT or LSAT tests cannot be substituted. Experience with numerical computing is also recommended. Applications from students in applied fields such as biology, biochemistry, economics and computer science are strongly encouraged, with the understanding that necessary mathematical coursework may have to be completed before or soon after enrollment in the program. Entering students should have 2-3 semesters of calculus and one semester of linear algebra.
Application Deadline:
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. To receive full consideration for financial aid, apply by February 1.
Financial Aid:
Financial aid is available to masters students in the form of Public Health Program scholarships and research apprenticeships. The PHP scholarship grants roughly 25% tuition. Research apprenticeships cover a larger portion of tuition and provide a monthly stipend. These awards are based on merit and qualifications; student loans also are available through the Financial Aid Office.
5th-Year Masters Program for Brown Undergraduates
The 5th-year master's degree option allows Brown undergraduates to continue at the University for a master's degree after completing their bachelor's degrees. Up to two courses of the eight required for the master's degree may be completed while the student is an undergraduate, but at least six semester courses must be taken while in residence.
Students must apply for this program before they complete their undergraduate studies. Admission must be approved by the department in which the master's degree is sought and by the Graduate School. While a student must be enrolled as an active undergraduate student at the time of application, admission to the graduate program can be deferred for up to two years with approval of the department.
How to Apply:
All admission decisions for graduate programs are made at the program level. Rising juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a 5th-year master's should contact faculty in their intended programs. Students must complete an application before graduation but may defer their admission for up to two years.
The application process for a 5th-year master's is simplified for the benefit of students. There is no application fee and applicants are not required to take the GRE. Students should complete the associated forms and submit them, along with a copy of their internal record, to the Associate Dean of the Graduate School for Academic Affairs.
Financial Aid:
Undergraduate financial-aid awards do not extend into graduate school. Please refer to financial aid information under the description of masters programs.
